Should I Change Careers—or Am I Just Burned Out?

“I think I need a new career.”

Sometimes that’s exactly right.

Other times, what you actually need is a different employer, different boundaries, different expectations—or simply time to recover from burnout.

When you’re exhausted, it can be difficult to tell the difference.

Start With What You Actually Want to Escape

What feels unbearable?

Is it the work itself?

Your supervisor?

The culture?

Long hours?

A lack of autonomy?

Too much responsibility?

Too little challenge?

Identifying the specific source of dissatisfaction can help distinguish a career problem from a workplace problem.

Imagine the Same Work Under Better Conditions

This thought experiment can be surprisingly useful.

Imagine doing essentially the same work while being fairly compensated, respected, appropriately challenged, and able to leave work at a reasonable hour.

Would you still want out?

If the answer is yes, the profession itself may deserve closer examination.

If the answer is no, you may not need to abandon your career.

You may need a healthier version of it.

Consider What Your Career Represents

Career decisions often become tangled with identity.

Leaving a prestigious role may feel like losing status.

Changing professions may feel like wasting years of education.

Choosing a lower-paying position may challenge beliefs about success.

Staying somewhere familiar may feel safer even when you’re unhappy.

These aren’t merely logistical questions. They’re emotional ones.

Notice the Role Fear Is Playing

Fear doesn’t automatically mean you shouldn’t make a change.

Major transitions are supposed to contain uncertainty.

But fear can also convince you that you need perfect confidence before taking action.

You probably won’t get it.

Instead, you may need enough clarity to decide which uncertainty you are willing to live with.

Therapy Can Help You Separate Burnout From Misalignment

You don’t necessarily need someone to tell you which job to take.

You may need a space where you can hear your own preferences more clearly.

Therapy for Career & Life Transitions can help you ask:

What am I moving away from?

What am I moving toward?

What tradeoffs am I willing to make?

And perhaps most importantly:

What do I want my work to make possible in the rest of my life?
